Tell us about your line.

Sara Happ is a line of luxury lip products, sold in over 400 stores nationwide and distributed in 20 countries worldwide. We do lips and only lips. All of our products exfoliate, hydrate and heal. From the original Lip Scrub to the beloved Lip Slip, we believe in creating products that do exactly what they say they’ll do, every time.

What are some of your personal beauty regimens and tips? 

Every single night, whether I have 5 minutes or 45 minutes,  I soak in a steaming hot bubble bath doused in Aura Cacia lavender essential oil. I cleanse and exfoliate from head to toe then dry off with a giant white fluffy towel. Spa night, every night.  I slather The Lip Slip and Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Hand Cream on, put on my eye mask and hop into bed! Each morning, I splash warm water on my face followed by Origins Plantscription Eye Cream, Power Serum and SPF 25 Cream.

The Lip Scrub and our Pink Slip Gloss are the last things I do before I leave for the office!

What are some of your most trusted beauty brands? 

Josie Maran for body, M-61 for face, Origins for overall skincare, Kevyn Aucoin for color, and Bobbi Brown for everything, everything, everything!

What prompted you to launch your brand? 

While working at ESPN in Connecticut, I faced brutally cold winters that left my lips chapped. I’m huge on exfoliating, so I Googled “lip scrub” and found that there were no results. I couldn’t believe it. So I went to my kitchen and created a sugar based lip exfoliant with yummy essential oils and, viola, The Lip Scrub was born. I was obsessed and began using it every day. I had a feeling other girls would, too.

Can you tell us some hurdles and obstacles you've gone through in starting a beauty business? 

Getting cosmetic labs to listen to me back in 2005 was rough. Because the product didn’t exist, labs didn’t even own the machinery necessary to make this new thing I’d created in a mixing bowl with spatulas. I had to push these giant companies and convince them that there was a hole in the marketplace that we could fill together. It was an uphill battle for sure.

What do you love most about Dallas/Ft. Worth area? 

Where do I start? The people: kind, welcoming, killer sense of style. Women here just go for it. I love that. The food: Stampede 66 Prickly Pear Margaritas and fried chicken? Heaven.

Nordstrom at the Galleria? My playground. Each time I come back it just keeps getting better. 

What’s on the horizon for your brand? 

We’re out to solve every lip problem I’ve heard about in the last 10 years. People are so generous with us. They share their concerns, they tell me what they feel self-conscious about, what they’d change about their lips, what bothers them. With thoughtful chemistry and serious focus, we can deliver exactly what our customers want and need. I’m so excited about what we’ve got planned. 

Any tips for those interested in venturing into beauty entrepreneurship?

I would encourage entrepreneurs to seek out mentors. My mentors have been game changers for me. Find people who have strengths and experience that you don't. Learn from their expertise. Soak up their knowledge. Listen to them.

Success doesn’t happen overnight and smart people don’t go it alone.
