Name & Professional Title:
Renée Rouleau , Celebrity Esthetician
My interest in the beauty business began when I was growing up around my grandmother's beauty salon. Running her own business and catering to a female clientele, my grandmother served as an inspiration and a model of female strength and empowerment. The effects of a nurturing touch on the salon's clients created an equally lasting impact. Those early years formed a foundation for my very own business model, my ongoing interest in beauty and skin care, and my dedication to helping other women. These values have been instilled in me from the moment I earned my esthetician’s license (age 19) and opened my first business (age 21).
I have been building my expertise over the last 25+ years by working with women and men of all ages in their quest to attain healthy, glowing and flawlessly beautiful skin. While I see clients in Dallas, I also regularly travel to LA and New York City to take celebrities. I founded National Skin Care Awareness Month, held annually in September, to promote no-nonsense tips and tricks for caring and protecting the skin. I also blog regularly with of-the-moment and seasonal advice, how-tos and research findings. Unique to my brand and skin care approach is my “9 Skin Types” philosophy. Early on, I recognized the skin care industry’s one-size-fits-all approach was not in-sync with what the modern client wants, or needs, in their pursuit of balanced, healthy skin. Rather than pigeonhole clients into basic skin types (dry, normal, oily), I embarked on creating customized, benefits-driven regimens and high-performance formulations that garner meaningful results. My approach is simple: With the proper tools, effective products, knowledge and a disciplined regimen, anyone can have great skin. Today, I have created a well-rounded “toolbox”, complete with over 65 signature products and easy-to-implement instructions.
What are your TOP skincare tips for blushing brides?
To avoid wedding day jitters practice deep breathing.
Apply a gel mask the day of. Gel masks are water-based so they won’t add any oil to the skin, yet they calm the skin and soothe away redness caused from wedding day nerves.
*Try the Renée RouleauBio Calm Repair Masque.
Don’t experiment with eating any new foods or using any new skin care treatments or products the week before an event. Stay with tried and true so avoid any unexpected negative reactions.
Recommendations for combating the DFW summer heat?
Wear sunscreen faithfully and be smart about it. I do recommend, you always use a minimum of SPF 30 and slather it on. My benchmark is at least a nickel-sized amount to coat the face and another nickel-sized second application to the neck and any exposed chest. SPF should be worn year round, but it is absolutely a must daily in the summer, even if you’re indoors because skin-damaging UV rays and sunlight penetrate through clouds and windows.
Keep skin out of the heat as much as possible. Heat from summer sun triggers inflammation, which then sets off a response to increase melanin activity resulting in hyper-pigmentation (brown sunspots). It may come as a surprise that sunspots are not directly only caused from the sun’s rays but the heat, too. Use cooling products or a gel mask after sun exposure to bring down the temperature of the skin and try to stay inside during the peak heat hours if pigmentation is a concern.
Use a refreshing, cooling cleanser. The Renée Rouleau Luxe Mint Cleansing gel is the perfect way to deep clean the pores to rid the skin of dirt and oil while leaving it feeling invigorated and energized. The essence of mint, spearmint and rosemary give skin a cooling sensation. Dull, tired skin will instantly look healthier, refreshed and more radiant. Actress Emmy Rossum is even a loyal fan!
What are some of your favorite products in your product line?
I consider my Advanced Resurfacing Serum a must-have for every one of my clients. This is my first product containing retinol - scientifically proven ingredient for reducing sun damage, lines and wrinkles and creating a smooth, younger-looking texture. A lot of people have tried to use prescription retinoids (Retin-A, Renova etc.) promoted by dermatologists, but find their sensitive skin cannot tolerate the redness, dryness and peeling that it will cause for the first few months of use. With the Advanced Resurfacing Serum you can get prescription-like results with this powerful serum without experiencing irritation or dryness. I swear by it for making pores look smaller and softening lines.
What's currently on your TOP shelf?
1. Dry Bar Detox Dry Shampoo – I was late to the dry shampoo party, but I love how this one keeps my hair looking clean in between washes. The scent is a little overpowering, but it has grown on me.
2. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation – I didn’t start wearing liquid foundation until a few years ago because I was so afraid of it clogging my oily, blemish-prone skin. However, I haven’t had a problem with this one. It gives my skin an incredible luminous and smooth look, while making my large pores virtually invisible.
3. Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Eyeshadow Primer – This primer creates a great base on my eyelids, which helps with an even eye shadow application and gives a long-lasting effect.
4. Too Faced Melted Liquefied Long Wear Lipstick – This long-lasting, silky lipstick has some serious staying power and comes in some fun, bright colors.
5. Renée Rouleau Vitamin C Eye Brightener – We just relocated our corporate headquarters to Austin, as well as me moving there personally. So between getting the office up and running with a new team to getting settled into a new house, I’m short on beauty sleep and that makes me look really tired. Thankfully, my Vitamin C Eye Brightener really helps to make my eyes look bright and awake—even on the sleepiest of days.

What's on the horizon for your brand in the near future?
We are growing very fast. Not intentionally, but word is spreading rapidly for people recognizing that they can’t use products simply for the usual generic skin types of dry, normal and oily. We launched an on-line Skin Type Quiz that people can take to find out their true skin type and that has spread across the web like wild fire. So at this point, it’s just managing our growth and staying true to our company vision. With the Austin move, we will be offering our skin care spa services later this year so that’s what’s up next. In addition to coming out with new products like a neck cream and new moisturizer to balance the needs of acne-prone yet, aging skin types.
