DFW Beauty Guide: Spring Beauty

'Tis the season for spring cleaning ladies time to update those makeup kits and transition your closet to reflect the current trends. We know how daunting of a task this can be so we consulted with Elaine Barnett, a local Dallas/Ft.Worth beauty expert who was gracious enough to provide some insight on makeup tips, hair techniques, and product reviews for the season.

We've created a visual presentation showcasing how easily you can transition your look three different ways in one full day. Morgan Chidsey, captured each beautiful phase on our muse Sierra Loren represented by The Campbell Agency, and last but not least spring trends provided by Strut Boutique were styled by moi!

The goal for this look is an overall natural and bronzy glow for Spring any time of day. First, prep your skin with a moisturizer and primer using Origins Energy-Boosting Moisturizer, it is packed with antioxidants and has a lovely citrus scent. The recommended primer used is Tarteʼs Clean Slate Flawless 12-hr Waterproof Brightening Primer which has Vitamin C and Mica pigments for a subtle brightening effect and a healthy glow. Next, mix a liquid illuminator with your foundation, preferably Becca Cosmetics’ Shimmering Skin Perfector in the color Golden Opal Pearl with Makeup Forever HD Foundation to give a lightweight coverage with a subtle dewy finish. Next, define your lashes with a bronze colored eye pencil using Tarteʼs Skinny Smolder EYES Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner in the color Sunstone Bronze and tight lined the eyes by going in between the lashes for a natural look. To finish off the look, brush up your brows with clear mascara, apply mascara to the eyes and apply a nude gloss on the lips. The recommended products use to accomplish this look is, Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel, Covergirl 24hr Wear Mascara in black and NYX Butter Gloss in the color Fortune Cookie.

The goal for this look is to shy away from the typical black or brown smokey eye and transition to a pretty purple for a sultry Spring night look. First, start with eye shadow primer using Too Faced Shadow Insurance and apply a small amount to the eyelids. Next, with a flat shadow brush using the Sephora Collection Pro Shadow Brush #14, take Cut the Cake and apply only to the lids of your eyes and along the lower lash line. After that take a fluffy crease brush, use Sephora Collection Pro Crease Brush #10 and mix I Do with Kiss the Bride and sweep over your crease for a transition color. Lastly take a dark purple liner, using Tarte Skinny Smolder EYES Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner in the color Deep Amethyst. Line your eyelids only in the upper lash line starting from the middle of your eye to the outer corner of your eye.

To finish off the eyes, take the same purple eyeliner and apply it to your waterline on the bottom and top and then finish with a black mascara. Use makeup remover, (Bi-Facil by Lancôme is amazing) to get rid of any fall out underneath the eyes and then apply your regular foundation routine. You want to emphasize the eyes so apply light contour on the cheeks minus the blush, and add a glossy pink lip.Once you’re pretty game face is complete, shift focus on creating the perfect hairstyle that compliments your entire look.

The goal for this look is to make the lips pop while keeping the eyes subtle yet defined for a Spring day look. After applying your normal foundation routine, start by applying primer to your eyelids. Sweep Virgin all over the eyelid, brow bone, and inner corner of the eyes. Next, with a fluffy crease brush take Urban Decay Naked and sweep that in your crease. To create the winged liner look, take a cream or gel liner with an angled liner brush, preferably Makeup Forever Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Eye Shadow and Sephora’s Pro Angled Liner Brush #22. Start about half way on the lash line right above the pupil, drag the brush to the outer corner of the eye and then lightly flick the brush up and out towards the brow for a soft winged liner look. For the lips, we want a matte finish so that it stays on all day giving a modern day appeal; preferably using NYX Satin Matte Lip Cream in color Amsterdam with OCC Cosmetics lip brush for a more defined lip. Apply a light pink toned blush to the apples of your cheeks; a recommendation is to apply blush and then add a bit of foundation powder on top so that the blush peeks through the powder and looks more natural. Preferred products include, Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in color Fearless and Sephora Collection 8HR Mattifying Compact Foundation.

For a natural look you can never go wrong with a sleek ponytail, its classic and a very simple hair technique to perform on your own. You can pull of the perfect ponytail by doing the following: spritz the front and crown of hair with water and apply a pea size amount of Lock It Extreme Style Gel by L’Oreal Paris. Once you’ve thoroughly brushed the hair smoothly into a hair tie, apply Paul Mitchell Smoothing Super Skinny Serum on the remainder of the hair for maximum shine. To accomplish the other two looks, smoothly brush the hair back into loosely weft curls or beach waves for a day look and pull the hair up into a braided faux bun for a night look.

Now that hair and makeup is checked off the list, the girl on the go needs a ready to wear Spring wardrobe. Neutral colors such as cream, tan, and grey, floral patterns, mixed prints, and tribal accessories are still trending this season. We’ve discovered one of the best boutiques in DFW, Strut in the Bishop Arts District is stocked with amazing and affordable pieces.

Some of their most favorable items range from oversized tee shirts, tank dresses, wrap skirts, and square cut, boxy blouses. And there you have it ladies, your guide to a successful transition into Spring!
