TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND, AND HOW GOT INTO THIS FIELD? IS THIS YOUR PASSION?
I have been married for 10 years, and I have two boys, ages 7 and 4. My life is a little crazy. I started in photography when my older son was born, when my father-in-law gave me a nicer camera than I had ever had before. I spent so much time learning and studying about photography. A LOT of time! I took tons of photos of my son (he was my guinea pig!), and then friends and family started asking me to take photos of their children. Then I slowly built my family photography business. I had always loved and appreciated boudoir photography, and I had always wanted to try it, so about 3 1/2 years ago I started to really focus my studying and education on boudoir photography. I then convinced some of my girlfriends to let me photograph them….we rented a hotel room, hired a hair and makeup artist, and had a BLAST! And I was hooked! I love the session itself, seeing a woman feeling anxious and nervous and maybe not entirely loving her body, and then by the end she is totally owning her shoot, loving her body, and feeling like she can take on the world! I LOVE that! And then, when she sees her images….oh my gosh, to hear her say she can’t believe how beautiful she is, that she never thought she could look like that, I tell ya, it’s pretty awesome. I love showing women how beautiful they are, because most of us walk around having no idea how amazing we are!
EXPERT TIPS, TRICKS AND RECOMMENDATIONS?
I always recommend to clients that before their shoot they exfoliate like crazy, then lotion up so that their skin is nice and soft and glowing. A manicure and a pedicure the day before is always great, too. I also tell them to bring outfits for their shoot that when they put them on they think:
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR BRAND IN 3 YRS?
We have recently hired a new associate photographer. This has allowed us to be able to offer boudoir photography at a lower entry price point than before. We are able to offer more variety in our packages, and we hope that these new offerings will mean that every woman will find the perfect package for her and schedule her own shoot! Also, we are opening a small, luxury lingerie boutique in the studio called Luxe Boudoir. In three years I would love to see Luxe Boudoir in a beautiful retail space with Courtney Engle Boudoir Photography located upstairs. Buy your lingerie then head upstairs for a boudoir shoot.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT DFW THAT MAKES FOR A GREAT PLACE TO START A BEAUTY FOCUSED BRAND?
I think women in our area like to feel beautiful and love to get pampered. We appreciate quality and know that the very best of everything is usually an investment and always worth every penny!
ANY TIPS FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN STARTING A CAREER AROUND BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY?
Study, study, study!
I was a family photographer before transiting to being exclusively a boudoir photographer. I knew about photography and how to get a properly exposed image, all of that technical stuff, but with boudoir it’s all about posing and lighting. Women tell me all the time that they would love to do a boudoir session, but that first they need to lose 10 pounds. I tell them that I can do more for them in 60 seconds with good, flattering posing and beautiful light than they could do spending six months in the gym! Knowing how to pose women so that they look their best is crucial. Studying from other boudoir photographers and learning what makes them successful is very important when deciding to go into boudoir photography.
IF YOU COULD SHOOT ANYONE, WHO WOULD IT BE, AND WHY?
Oh my gosh, the list is endless! I tell everyone that I would LOVE to photograph every woman in Dallas/Fort Worth! As for celebrities, the top of my list is Christina Hendricks from Mad Men. First of all, her CURVES! The are killer! Second, she just oozes sensuality. I would love, love, love to get her in my studio!
