DFW Beauty Guide: Seeing Green

dfw organic hair - dallas - ft.worth dfw

In honor of November, our month devoted to all things hair, here are ten, tried and true hair products we LOVE. From shampoo, to scalp tonic and sea salt spray, the following products are cruelty-free and non-toxic.

Not only do green products work wonders on your hair compared to their chemical-ridden counterparts, but they are also less likely to provoke allergic reactions. Lastly – if you aren’t yet convinced to be a green-hair-product-convert – keep in mind that these hair care brands are devoted to the protection of the planet and of animals, and that’s something everyone can get behind.

CLEAN

Dear Clark - Resurrecting Wash, $24.

This shampoo and conditioner duo is every bit the hair salvation they say it is. Handcrafted in Texas, the Resurrecting Wash and Rinse rely on three powerhouse ingredients, Rose of Jericho, Aloe Vera, and Sunflower Seed Oil, for a joint cleansing and hydrating effect. The wash and rinse are ideal for dry, overstressed hair, but with such a heavenly scent, everyone should try the combo at least once!

*Local, sulfate, phosphate and cruelty free

Kevin.Murphy - Fresh.Hair, $35.

For those who use dry shampoo, this product will be your new best friend. Paraben-free and antioxidant rich, Fresh.Hair removes excess oil and odors from day-old hair, and gives lifeless hair body, texture, and shine. To apply, shake the can vigorously and spray evenly and lightly onto dry hair, then rub or brush through.

Tip: Fresh.Hair comes in an adorably tiny 1.9fl bottle as well. Throw this mini version in your purse for quick touchups throughout the day.

CONDITION

Aubrey Organics - Biotin Repair Scalp Tonic, $8.95

All hair types can benefit from this scalp tonic, but it is mainly intended for those with fine, thinning hair. The product is lightweight and has a refreshing, citrus scent. Applied twice daily, the tonic invigorates the scalp, restores vital nutrients and reverses thinning to promote a full head of hair.

Dear Clark - Smoothing Elixir, $26

As a person with dry, thick, long, and color-treated hair, having a tame, shiny mane is typically only attained by a trip to the salon. Dear Clark’s Smoothing Elixir, however, is a revelation. Applied to wet hair from the nape of the neck to the ends, the elixir does away with frizz, smoothes unruly hairs, and even seems to brighten my highlights with its shine-inducing, natural ingredients. I’ve found this product to be a satisfying green-replacement for Kérastase’s Nectar Thermique.

Weleda - Rosemary Conditioning Hair Oil, $16.50

This product is intensely nourishing, smells amazing (yet not overwhelming), and is good for all hair types. For those with normal hair, apply a few drops of the Hair Oil to your ends when wet for extra conditioning care that will soften split ends. For extremely dry hair, don’t be afraid to use a few more drops to coat your hair from the nape of the neck to the ends to strengthen your locks. To see an immediate difference in your hair, Weleda suggests using the oil for an overnight replenishing treatment. To do so, massage a small amount into the scalp and brush through to the ends, then wash the oil out in the morning. Regardless of how you use it, this oil will endow your hair with enviable shine and softness.

STYLE

John Masters Organics -Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray with Lavender, $16.50

For instant mermaid hair, spray Sea Mist on your tresses after shampooing and conditioning. This sea salt spray is unique because on top of giving your hair the texture and volume achieved after a day at the beach, the added organic lavender protects hair from drying, normalizes scalp conditions, and even slows hair loss. Other perks? The all-natural Sea Mist is safe for color-treated hair, enhances curls, and absorbs oil between shampooing.

Intelligent Nutrients - Volumizing Foam, $31.

Swap your current mousse out for this lightweight, non-stick foam. The soft hold of the foam is produced by Larch Tree Resin, a gentle ingredient that will not irritate the scalp as chemical and synthetic holding ingredients can. To give your hair optimum, Texas-worthy lift, apply the foam to the roots while hair is wet. Hair can either be air-dried or blown dry afterwards for bombshell volume and bounce.

Intelligent Nutrients - Perfect Hold Hair Spray, $31.

If you’re like me and recoil at the sight – and smell – of hairspray, think again! Intelligent Nutrients’ (food-grade!) take on the hairstyling staple leaves nothing to be desired. To make a cheap, effective product, conventional hairsprays are made of petrochemicals, silicone and plasticizing agents. These toxic chemicals are inhaled when sprayed and cannot be absorbed by the body. With repeated use, these hairsprays lead to negative health effects on the lungs. However, in harnessing organic plant power, this effective hairspray gives all hair types flexible, lasting hold, while still being silky and brush-able.

Kevin.Murphy - Night.Rider

Night.Rider is a best-selling Kevin.Murphy product, and a must-have for those with short or choppy hair (men or women). Have an undercut and need help styling the longer pieces on top? Then this pomade is for you. Night.Rider has a strong hold, a matte texture, and is paraben-free. To use it, rub a small amount between your palms and distribute evenly through dry or damp hair. The product is easy to get out of its container (unlike other brands of pomade) and allows you just the right amount of time to work with it before it sets firmly.

*Paraben free, cruelty free
