DFW Beauty Guide: Holiday Fit Favorite

With the holidays coming up, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out what you are going to make for all of the family gatherings, let alone, figuring out how to make the dishes healthier. This burden, on top of knowing that so many temptations will be around can make the holidays even more stressful!

If you’re like us, the sweet stuff is what gets us! A major staple at any table is a sweet potato dish. Good news! They’re filled with awesome vitamins! Aside from their amazing taste, they contain high levels of vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin D, fiber, iron, magnesium, and potassium. They are also high in carotenoids like beta carotenoids, which you can think of as powerful antioxidants that help prevent cancer.

Awesome, right?!

One thing to watch out for in recipes is what ELSE gets added in to the potatoes. Rarely will “mashed sweet potatoes” just be..mashed sweet potatoes. Restaurants will usually add butter, brown sugar, cream, etc. So, yes, you’re still getting the vitamin benefits, but why add something when it’s already perfect as is!

Here’s a SIMPLE way to make delicious mashed sweet potatoes that taste as amazing as they are for you.The EASIEST way to cook sweet potatoes is to stick 5-6 whole potatoes in a crock-pot, and put it on high for 5-6 hours. After it’s done, you should be left with super soft sweet potatoes! Alternatively, you can wrap individual potatoes in foil and bake them at 350 degrees for about 45 min-1 hour, or until soft. Then, you will peel off the skin—OR, you can leave it on and mash it with the skin. FYI, the skin is full of nutrients as well! Stick the potatoes in a large bowl and add:  1 T vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg. You can also add some unsweetened almond milk (we love it!) or regular milk to thin it out a little. Then, for the fun part: mix it ALL up! Now, all you have to do is pour it into a serving dish. You can even make a pretty design on the top with a fork!

So easy and so delicious!
